Parsifal AR – Bayreuth Festival

With "Parsifal AR," the 2023 Bayreuth Festival presented its first opera production with augmented reality – live and parallel to the stage action. During the performance, 330 audience members were given AR glasses that superimposed digital image layers such as light phenomena, animated symbols, and virtual projections directly into their field of vision – synchronized with the music and the scenic action.
The technical implementation was carried out in close collaboration with MIT Theater Arts and with significant input from Vincent Kaufmann (DTHG), a specialist in immersive technologies, who was responsible for the implementation on behalf of the festival. The project marks a milestone in the combination of classical music and immersive technology – and demonstrates how Richard Wagner's idea of the Gesamtkunstwerk can be reinterpreted using modern means.
